Practical advice to help you bust that bad odour!

How do you get rid of this smell? Up to now, the simple answer has been ‘with great difficulty’. You can try more frequent cleaning, air-fresheners, harsh (and environmentally-harmful) cleansers but, despite everything, you are still aware of the lingering odours.

How to get rid of a bodily waste smell

Homemade “recipes” for the removal of urine odours are common on the internet. You can spend hours looking at them all. “How to” sites and forums suggest water and vinegar, baking soda, toothpaste, raw potato, window cleaner,  quaternary disinfectants, citrus scents, bleach, hydrogen peroxide…. The list goes on and on.

Here are just a few –

  • Powders
Most of the urine soaks in to the underlay and/or floor, totally out of reach of absorbent powder.
  • Disinfectants
Kills the bacteria, leaving the urine, so the food source remains. When new bacteria arrive, the odour returns.
  • Vinegar
NEVER start with vinegar – it sets stains.  Totally ineffective for odour.
  • Ammonia solution
Done properly, it works well for urine stains, but not odours. Follow with vinegar solution to neutralise.
  • Citrus scents
Obviously a simple short term masking agent.
  • Shampoo/Wet Vac
If used immediately and the problem is a one-off, can work.  If urine is allowed to soak into the carpet, wetting spreads the urine out across a wide area of underlay and floor and the odour is worse. Persistent use of a wet vac system can also cause damage to your carpet.

Below is our step-by-step guide get rid of the smell for good!

1

Removing Urine from Carpets:

Method 1

  1. Use paper towels to soak up as much of the urine as possible.
  2. Continue blotting until the area is only a little damp.
  3. When you are finished the area should be almost dry.
  4. Rinse the area with clean, cold water. Do this frequently, and remove as much of the water as possible each time using towels.

Method 2

  1. Use paper towels to soak up as much of the urine as possible.
  2. Continue blotting until the area is only a little damp.
  3. Apply a bio-enzymatic cleaner (such as Zybax Ultra) to the affected area.
  4. Don’t be tempted by products that “kill bacteria causing the smell”. It is the urine that causes the malodours, you need to get rid of the urine to get rid of the smell.

Top Tips

  • Cover the affected area in order to reach all the uric acid crystals left behind from the urine.
  • Don’t skimp on using the product. You will be wasting your time and money! However please remember that if you are using Zybax a more concentrated solution will not help with your problem. Zybax must be diluted to allow the ‘friendly’ bacteria to work properly.
  • If the odours are old, you may even need to apply a second and third treatment. You should not have to scrub with good enzyme cleaners.
  • When using any enzyme-based odour and stain remover, make sure that it also contains “friendly bacteria.” The bacteria will help enhance the odour and stain removal.
2

Removing faeces (poo) and vomit from Carpets:

Some solids are very easy to remove with a paper towel or plastic glove. Unfortunately, some other ‘solids’ aren’t very solid at all. If this is the case, use a piece of cardboard to remove as much as possible from the fibres of the carpet. It’s always best to do this straight away, before it has had time to dry.

  1. Mix together mild dishwashing soap or laundry detergent with warm water, and gently work into the soiled area. The aim is to clean all the solids from the carpet pile.
  2. Use paper towels to soak up as much as possible.
  3. Continue blotting until the area is only a little damp.
  4. Apply a bio-enzymatic cleaner (such as Zybax Ultra) to the affected area to remove any trace organics.

Top Tips

  • Do not use the ammonia on wool carpeting, as this will leave stains on the material.
  • Peroxide can stain your carpet; be careful if you use it.
  • If using a steam cleaner/extraction machine, use only hot water for the first pass – no cleaning solution or any kind. After using the hot water and extracting as much as possible, use the solution recommended by your steam cleaner/extractor manufacturer for cleaning pet stains for the second pass. This will not only take away any smell, but also any stains.

These solutions are tried and tested but, like all things, some situations are beyond normal. If trouble persists or they don’t work, visit our friends at Zybax, for specialised solutions guaranteed to work.
